Knockalisheen Resident Says New Scheme Welcome But More Needed

A resident at a Clare Direct Provision Centre has raised concern that a new scheme allowing undocumented people here to regularise their status doesn’t go far enough.

The Department of Justice says the scheme will enable applicants to remain and reside in the state and regularise their residency status, but it will be time-limited, with a six month window to apply from January.

It’s expected that up to 15,000 undocumented migrants across the country, including a number living here in Clare, could use it to claim residency.

Knockalisheen resident and Spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, Bulelani Mfaco says it will be life-changing for many, but there are some aspects that fall short of what’s required.
