The Labour Party in Clare will select it’s candidate for the General Election tonight.
Scarriff Barrister and farmer Michael McNamara, who contested the European Elections in 2009, is expected to be ratified by local party members at a convention in Ennis, though it’s unclear whether a second candidate will be put forward.
The Labour party is hoping to make significant gains in the General Election in the New Year but hasn’t won a Dáil seat in Clare since Dr Moosajee Bhamjee in 1992 and currently has only one representative respectively on Clare County Council and Ennis and Shannon Town Councils.
Michael McNamara has declined to comment on his possible candidacy for now, but speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus just five weeks ago, he said he was unlikely to contest the general election and wouldn’t represent the Labour party until he knew their policies
