A Labour Senator advocating the abstraction of water from Lough Derg, despite strong opposition in the Mid-West, claims it will not damage the environment.
Senator John Whelan has called for a strategy to be put in place to push the projectt ahead, saying it would create thousands of jobs in his own area of Co. Laois.

Locally, though, fears have been expressed that the proposal, which some say is vital to preserving water supply in the East and MIdlands, is bad for the economy as well as the environemt.
