A Lahinch councillor says the regular misspelling of the town name on road signs is costing money.
A County Council committee has written to Transport Infrastructure Ireland to request funding to change the spelling of the name everywhere to Lahinch with an A, not an E.
The saga of the spelling of Lahinch has been ongoing for many years – while the common spelling is Lahinch, most road signs spell it Lehinch with an E.
It’s far from the only area where there are spelling issues on signage – Ennistymon, Corofin, Kildysart and Scarriff all have the same problem – but it could now be solved in Lahinch.
Local Fine Gael Councillor for Lahinch Bill Slattery has outlined how money is being sought to rectify the issue there.
The plan is to use Lahinch as a pilot scheme and if approval from the TII is awarded, the council intends to extend the plans to other areas with similar issues.
Lahinch business owner Donach O’Loughlin says it’s been going on for many years and it’s confusing tourists.
For now, the council waits to hear from TII to see if their request is approved and the spelling of Lahinch is finally corrected.
