Lahinch GP Insists Income Is Fairest Way Of Handing Out Medical Cards

A West Clare GP insists the income threshold should be the only method used to determine who is entitled to medical cards.

Figures show that the number of people covered by a medical card has gone down to 1.59 million, a drop of 56,810 since January.

Eligibility for the cards is based primarily on income, meaning as more people become employed, they lose their entitlement to the cards.

But age has also been used as a determining factor and Lahinch GP Dr Michael Kelleher, who’s on the IMO’s GP Committee, says the fairest way is to look at income:
