Larger class sizes could be on the cards

 

The Teachers Union of Ireland says it’s appalled by proposals from the Department of Education to cut teaching posts and increase classroom sizes.

It’s understood the Department is planning to increase the pupil-teacher ratio in primary schools by one – to 28.

In secondary schools, the student-teacher radio would also be increased by one – to 20.

But these plans, which are expected to be announced in December’s budget, will also mean the loss of more than 1-thousand-100 teaching posts .

However, General Secretary of the TUI Peter McMenamin says the loss of teachers will also lead to a loss in subject choices for students:
