Latest Storm Update

A number of Clare roads are impassable this morning, while thousands are without power, as the latest storm to batter the county continues.

Winds picked up overnight, and with high tide at around 6:00 this morning, flooding was reported in a number of coastal areas including Lahinch Promenade, Quilty, Killimer and Moyasta.

There are also reports that the Strandline wall in Kilkee has been knocked while the road from Lahinch to Liscannor is flooded.

Tides have receded, but the storm itself is intensifying.

A Met Eireann weather warning remains in place until tonight, while a gust of nearly 60 miles an hour has been recorded at Shannon. This, along with the heavy rains, has led to a number of problems inland.

Earlier flooding at the bridge in Clarecastle is said to be easing, though roads in Bunratty are impassable at present.

A pole has been knocked down between Mullagh and Miltown Malbay and there has also been a minor traffic accident there.

The river at the Black Weir Bridge near the Clare Inn has burst it’s banks, while the main Ennis/Kildysart Road is impassable at Ballycorrick. Flooding is also reported at Ballyalla.

The ESB says nearly 4,000 people in Lahinch, Ennistymon, Ennis and Cratloe are without power. A number of Aer Lingus services have been cancelled, including flights from Shannon to Edinburgh and London Heathrow this afternoon.  Intending passengers are advised to contact their airlines.

The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre will be closed all day due to hazardous conditions there.
