Legendary Clare hurler Jimmy Smyth passes away

The death has taken place of the legendary Clare hurler Jimmy Smyth.

The Ruan man played 156 times for his county and was named at corner forward on the Munster team of the Millennium.

Smyth is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers ever to play the game.

He was born in Ruan on New year’s day 1931   and he attended St Flannan’s college in the 1940’s making  his debut for the Clare minor’s while he was only 14,playing at the grade for five consecutive years while also making his senior debut at the age of 17.

He won five county titles with Ruan while also claiming the Oireachtas title in 1954 with Clare and featured on several Munster railway cup teams-winning five in a row from 1957 to 1961.

After his retirement he worked in Croke park as a Gaa execuitve officer and published two books about Gaa ballads and poems and was well known as a famous balladeer himself.

He is survived by his wife Vera and three children.
