Dr Michael Harty believes the popular tourist route through Clare, which is mostly made up of secondary roads, has experienced massive traffic increases over recent years, which are struggling to cope with wear and tear.
He's a member of the Rural Independent Alliance, which has launched a motion for a 50% increase in investment in rural and local roads, a vote on which will be taken in the Dáil today.
Dr Harty says wear and tear combined with extreme weather and particularly flooding is putting pressure on road maintenance requirements.
