Long Road Ahead for Clare County Council’s Coastal Protection Works

The local authorithy says there's a big task ahead to put in works in a bid to prevent similar destruction in the future.

Following last winters storms the Government allocated 16.8 million euro in funds to repair areas that had been hammered by the severe weather conditions.

However this fell short of the 36 million euro requested by Clare County Council and the local authority says it isn't hopeful of getting any more funding in response to the application.

In the 12 months since the storms six million euro worth of repairs and clean up works have been carried out.

Senior Enginneer with Clare County Council Tom Tiernan says the next step for over all protection works will be a long process.

One of the areas devastated by stoms Christine and Bridget was Kilbaha where the access road to the village was swept away.

Local resident Ailish Connolly says she's hopeful the Office of Public works will provide money for strengthening works.

While in Kilkee Clare County Council says a contractor is close to being appointed to carry out remediation, however local business man Johnny Redmond says he's increasingly frustrated by delays in fixing the strand line road that collapsed there.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has confirmed that the hurricane force winds recorded in Clare early last year were the strongest here in over 50 years.

A gust of 159 kilometres an hour was recorded at Shannon Airport on February 12th, the strongest gust there since 1961.

Met Eireann's annual report also says that last year was wetter, warmer and slightly sunnier than normal.
