Lough Derg Water plans under Dáil spotlight

Controversial proposals to pumps millions of gallons of water from Lough Derg to Dublin come under the spotlight again today.

Members of the Shannon Protection Alliance -who have strongly campaigned against the plans – are due to address the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment in Leinster House today.

Last month a delegation of TDs and Senators travelled to the proposed extraction site at Terryglass in Tipperary and met with local groups concerned about the impact it would have on both the environment and water tourism  in nearby areas like Mountshannon.

Today’s meeting will focus on the amount of water set to be pumped from Lough Derg, the times of the year at which it would be extracted and the procedures that would be put in place to shut-down the pipeline in the event of unforeseen negative consequences.
