New figures show an almost 50 per cent rise since the mid-1990’s in the overall number of cancer cases diagnosed each year in Ireland.

However, the number of patients surviving for five years after a diagnosis has risen from 40 per cent to 55 per cent over the same period.

Doctor Harry Comber from the National Cancer Registry says the increased prevalence of lung cancer in women can be blamed on smoking.
