Contracts to extend the M18 from Gort to Tuam will be signed today, bringing what's described as a major economic boost to the region.
The four-lane motorway, as well as additional roadways, will cost around €550 million, and is expected to be completed in 2017.
The new motorway promises to allow easier access to Clare and Shannon Airport for businesses and consumers in Galway and further afield.
It will also ease congestion in a number of towns en route.
Including additional roadways, 100km of roadways will be constructed.
The long awaited paper work will be signed by the Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar and the National Roads Authority at Lunchtime.
