Man arrested in Deirdre McCarthy Case

Gardai investigating the death of Ballyvaughan woman Deirdre McCarthy have made an arrest.

A man in his late 30s was arrested under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act on suspicion of the murder of the 43 year old local woman whose body was recovered at Fanore Strand last Thursday.

The suspect in believed to be from Clare but was arrested in Galway at around 12.30 this afternoon and is now being detained for questioning at Ennis Garda Station.

Meanwhile, the late Deirdre McCarthy was laid to rest at Bishops Quarters Cemetery in Ballyvaughan this afternoon following emotional scenes at the Church of St John the Baptist.

Chief Celebrant Fr Richard Flanagan described her killing as a "cruel and incomprehensible act" and asked moruners to pray for the McCarthy family and another "unfortunate family – broken and confused by the events of the past week".
