Man charged with air rage remanded on bail

A professional librarian charged with being drunk and abusive on board a flight forced to divert to Shannon has been remanded on bail.

Harold Albrecht was travelling on a flight to Vienna after studying The Holocaust for the past few weeks in the US, when the incident happened.

He’s facing a total of three charges.

Dressed in navy blue chino jeans and polo shirt, 32 year old Harald Albrecht remained silent during today’s brief hearing at Ennis District Court.

He was arrested at ten past seven this morning when An Aer Austrian flight from Washinton to Vienna was forced to divert to Shannon Airport.

The professional librarian made no reply when later charged and caution.

Albrecht’s accused of engaging in threatening or abuse behaviour on board the transatlantic flight , of acting in a manner likely to cause serious offence and failing to cease this when requested by cabin crew and intoxicated to such an extent to give rise to concern he may harm himself or others.

Objecting to bail Inspector Tom Kennedy told the court that Albrecht may pose a flight risk but his legal representative said the 32 year old was a professional librarian who travelled extensivly and presented the judge with a letter of recoomendation from the US libaries services where he had just studied for five weeks.

He was remanded on bail on a number of conditions including that he reside at a local Shannon hotel and is due back before the courts next Monday
