Man Charged with Murder of Ennis Student

A Barefield man has been charged with the murder of Ennis student Eoin Ryan.

31 year old Joe Heffernan of Cappabeg, Barefield was brought before a special sitting on Ennis District court  – following the discovery of the body of the 21 year old near the accused’s home yesterday morning.

Giving evidence of arrest and caution Garda Donagh Walsh told the court that at 5.40 this (Wednesday) evening – he arrested Joe Heffernan at Ennis Garda Station and charged him with the murder of 21 year Eoin Ryan at Cappabeg, Barefield on June 7th – in response to the charge – Joe Heffernan replied – "I Killed the Devil".

Solicitor John Casey told the court that Mr Heffernan has already been seen by local consultant Psychiatrist John O’Mahoney who advised that he be admitted to the Central Mental Hospital – Mr Casey also informed Judge Joseph Mangan that a bed was waiting for his client at the facility in Dundrum and asked if the court could assist in seeing that Joe Heffernan would be transferred there.

Judge Mangan said there was no need to make such a recommendation, adding "things will take there course" – as he remanded  Joe Heffernan in custody to Limerick Prison to appear before Ennis Distirct Court again on Friday.
