The alarm was raised at around 7.20pm last night, when a member of the public reported seeing a small rigid inflatable boat, which appeared to be out-of-control, close to the ESB’s power station at Moneypoint.

The caller said they believed there was no one in the craft and couldn’t see anyone in the water.

The crew of the Kilrush RBLI lifeboat and the Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter were dispatched to the area where they located a boat travelling around in circles.

A man, who had been on the boat, managed to swim ashore to Moneypoint power station, and a short time later, staff reported that he was safe and was being cared for by workers there.

The lifeboat crew towed the boat to Kilrush marina after it ran out of fuel and the engine stalled.

It's understood the man was exhausted but otherwise unharmed.
