The accident occured at around 6:45 this morning, on the in-bound portion of the Ennis Road between the Radisson Hotel and the Coonagh Roundabout.

A 27-year-old man was walking along the hard shoulder when he was hit by a truck.  He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was uninjured.

Gardaí closed the inbound portion of the road road to allow for a forensic examination.  Traffic is being diverted via Meelick and the route is not expected to re-open until this afternoon.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Mayorstone Garda Station on 061 456980.

Separately, a 22-month old boy has died in Co. Donegal after he was struck by a van which had driven into the driveway of his home at Creevegleve in Letterkenny at around 6:45 last evening.

The toddler was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital – but lost his fight for life.

Gardaí say the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.
