Martin To Appoint Ministers, Seanad Nominees Today

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will be elected Taoiseach this afternoon at a Dáil sitting in the Convention Centre.

It comes after Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party voted to support the programme for government by a three to one margin.

The Dáil will meet from 10.30 this morning with Micheál Martin to be elected Taoiseach around lunchtime.

He’ll then travel to Áras an Uachtaráin to be given his seal of office before appointing a cabinet of ministers, though it’s highly unlikely that any of those will come from Clare.

Micheál Martin will also announce the 11 Seanad nominees today, with particular interest in Clare amid rumours that both former Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley and current Greens Councillor Roisín Garvey could be selected.

Councillor Garvey has welcomed the endorsement of the deal by her party colleagues, and says the new government will be good for the county and country
