The Mayor of Clare has accused the Minister for Finance of a "pathetic cop-out" in his handling of increased interest rates by the banks.
Leading calls by members of Clare County Council for a moratorium on interest hikes, Shannon Councillor Tony Mulcahy said he won’t accept Minister Brian Lenihan’s statement that interest and charges are a matter for the banks, now that they’ve been bailed out by the taxpayer.
Other councillors described the banking crisis as the betrayal of the nation, and likened the recession to the famine times, agreeing that it’s time to call a halt to the hardship.
