Mayor Of Clare Wants Kilrush Memorial In Place In Next Few Months

The Mayor of Clare wants to see a memorial in place to commemorate residents of Kilrush mother and baby home within the next number of months.

Clare County Council, who owned and financed the West Clare facility during its operation between 1923 and 1932, issued a formal apology in respect of the home earlier this week.

The local authority here offered what it described as ‘its sincere apology for its role in this dark chapter in our nation’s history.’

As many as 168 babies may have died at the West Clare institution during its operation.

Fine Gael councillor Mary Howard says work is already well underway into providing an appropriate memorial in Kilrush.
