McGovern bids to appeal conviction to Supreme Court

 

Barefield man John McGovern, jailed for the fatal stabbing of a 14 year old boy in Ennis, is challenging his failed appeal.

Last July , The Court of Criminal Appeal ruled McGovern’s conviction for the manslaughter of Michael Doherty was safe, however next month his legal team are seeking to take the case to the Supreme Court.

In February 2009, John McGovern of Ballyduff, Barefield was jailed for 6 years by the Central Criminal Court for the fatal stabbing of settled traveller Michael DohertyDoherty outside Supermacs in Ennis three years ago.

The Barefield man also got a three year concurrent sentence for producing  a knife on the same date.

Last July he sought but failed to have the manslaughter conviction overturned but the three judge court of criminal appeal set aside his conviction for producing a knife.

Now McGovern’s legal team is attempting to take his case to the Supeme Court . They have lodged an application with the Court of Criminal Appeal seeking permission to have the matter heard in the higher court on a point of law of public importance

The application will be heard on Monday the seventh of February.
