McNamara Expresses Irish Water Concern

The government has rebuffed calls from Clare’s Labour TD for greater accountability for the new Irish Water group.

The new national water utility will gradually take over the responsibilities of 34 local authorities, including Clare County Council, from January but Deputy Michael McNamara has told the Dáil that he fears this change will give the public and elected representatives less of a say.

During a debate on the matter, he called for the Water Services Bill to be beefed up to take account of these concerns, but was told by Junior Minister Fergus O’Dowd that this isn’t necessary.
