McNamara wants referendum on upward rents

Clare’s Labour TD has called for a referendum to be held, if that’s what is required to abolish upward-only rent reviews.

Deputy Michael McNamara’s comments in the Dáil came during a debate in light of last week’s High Court ruling, allowing for a cut in rent for Bewleys on Grafton Street in Dublin, even though the restaurant’s landlord had claimed it was entitled to a five-yearly upwards only rent review.

The Attorney General has told the High Court that a change in the existing law would result in taxpayers having to pay compensation to landlords, but the Clare TD feels the matter should be put to a public vote
