Mid West losing agriculture department services

Clare farmers have called on the government to introduce a satellite Department of Agriculture office in the county, as the region’s main facility faces closure.

It emerged several weeks ago the District Veterinary Office in Raheen, Limerick was under threat of closure within weeks, and last night staff in the Department’s office in Tipperary Town were told that they’re to be re-located to the Department of Justice in the town.

Under government plans, farmers seeking face-to-face meetings with a Department official will be forced to travel to the only remaining office in Naas, less than three years after there had been a full-time office in Ennis.

Head of the ICMSA in Clare Martin McMahon says local services are required.
