A MidWest senior addiction counsellor says pandemic fueled alcohol issues are only beginning to appear now.
It comes as Beaumont hospital recorded a 28% increase in patients admitted with liver disease in the first half of this year – something which has been noted anecdotally in other units across the country.
Michael Guerin, addiction counsellor at Cuan Mhuire rehabilitation centre has described the numerous lockdowns and the stress experienced by many during the pandemic as the ‘perfect storm’ for alcohol issues to fester.

He says the fruits of the pandemic are only coming to light 18 months down the line.
