Minister Burton Apologises To Clare Families

The Social Protection Minister has apologised to families who received letters demanding the return of Free Travel passes from their long deceased relatives after complaints made to Clare FM were raised in the Oireachtas.

Last week, a Kilkee father who lost his son 19 years ago and an Ennis mother who’s daughter died in 1995 told Clare FM’s Morning Focus of their distress in receiving the letters this month.

They called for greater communications between government departments and sensitivity in their approach, an issue which was raised by Clare Senator Martin Conway in the Seanad.

Responding on behalf of the Social Protection Minister Joan Burton, her colleague Minister Fergus O’Dowd expressed regret to the Clare families concerned
