Minister praises Irish peacekeeping troops in Syria

The Minister of Defence has been praising the work of Irish Peacekeepers in the Golan Heights.

It's after Irish troops came to the assitance of Fillipino colleagues who were surrounded by an armed militia yesterday.

All of the Irish soldiers – who are on a UN peacekeeping mission in the area – have been accounted for and are said to be safe and well.

Minister Simon Coveney – speaking at a celebration of Liscannor Native, John P Holland –  who invented the submarine – said their efforts over the last 48 hours is something that Ireland can take pride in.

Minister Coveney, himself a passionate sailor, told the packed audience – which included members of the Irish, Japanese and American Navy – that the work of Irish troops in keeping peace is and should be recognised across the global – but that  the dangers also need to be paid attention to.

Speaking to Clare FM he says he's thankful the situation has calmed somewhat today.
