Minister Says Discussions With OPW On Heritage Sites Have Not Taken Place

Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan says it is too early to say whether responsibility for Clare’s heritage sites can be handed to the OPW or another public body.

The Green Party Minister has visited Bunratty Castle & Folk Park this week, amid concerns about the planned closure of heritage sites in the county at the end of this month.

Shannon Group, which manages a number of Clare’s heritage sites, is seeking up to €4 million to keep sites open, saying that without this funding they will have no option but to close the sites as planned in two weeks time.

They’ll be meeting with union representatives on Monday.

Minister Noonan says addressing the short term needs of the sites is the priority for now.
