Minister to receive report on Shannon Airport’s future

The fate of the future ownership of Shannon Airport should be made clearer this week.

It’s reported that the consultancy report on the possible separation of the Mid West Airport from Cork and Dublin will be handed over to the Transport Minister this week.

Its findings are expected to be made public in the coming weeks.

This report by Booze and Company into the possible separation of Shannon and Cork Airports from Dublin was commissioned by Minister Leo Varadkar last month.

Among the options being looked at is the privatisation or leasing of the Mid West Airport in an effort to restore it to profitability.

However this has been strongly rejected by a number of interest groups across the Mid West including Clare County Council, local Tds and Senators and the Irish Hotels Federation – who have all made submissions to Booz.

But speaking to Clare FM last week Minister Varadkar said that urgent action was needed at Shannon  which he stated was in danger of being downgraded the the country’s fourth airport – after Knock.

The consultancy report is due to be completed and handed over to the Minister this week – and is expected to brought before government in January.
