Ministers to discuss Egypt Crisis.

EU Foreign Ministers will meet in Brussels today to discuss the ongoing crisis in Egypt.

Nearly 900 people have died in a week of clashes between security forces and Islamist supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The bloodshed peaked in Cairo last Wednesday when the army stormed two camps of supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

The arrest of the supreme guide to the Muslim Brotherhood, yesterday has also raised fears of fresh unrest.

Four Irish citizens who’ve been jailed in Cairo could be facing charges for attempted murder.

Although police reports haven’t named the four, it’s believed they are the Halawa siblings, who were taken into custody last weekend when Egyptian army troops stormed a city centre mosque.

It’s expected they’ll be held for 15 days pending an investigation into charges including murder, arson, membership of an armed gang and possession of arms and explosives.

Mary Fitzgerald is the Irish Times’ Foreign Affairs correspondent – she says the four have denied all charges.
