Mixed Reaction to Reduced Septic Tank Fee

The Minister for the Environment has said some financial help would be available for people whose septic tanks are found to need significant upgrading after inspections begin next year.

However, Phil Hogan’s assurances have done little to satisfy those opposed to the new inspection laws here in Clare, who are accusing him of missing the real point of concern in how much repairs may cost following inspections.

As he announced a reduced registration fee of just five euro instead of 50 for those who register septic tanks before June, Minister Hogan said the approach of inspectors will be risk-based, and that not every septic tank will be inspected.

But West Clare rural campaigner Jim Connolly says he’s done nothing to allay the real fears of the public.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach’s accused opposition politicians of engaging in "hysterical comment and sensational headlines" over the cost of rectifying septic tanks.

Enda Kenny says the proposals from Government are "sensible" and ensure we comply with European directives.

And he says that the registration charge of five euro for the first three months is "less than the price of a pint in many areas".
