More calls for improvements to ambulance services in Clare

The National Ambulance Services is being called on once again to carry out a review of services in rural areas after a baby was delivered at a home in East Clare less than ten minutes after paramedics arrived.

Its claimed that if the call-out had been issued the following night, medical assistance may not have been provided on time as the Scarriff-based ambulance service were dispatched to an incident in Nenagh in South Tipperary.

Emergency services were alerted to a young mother in the late stages of labour on Monday evening around 5.10pm.

Paramedics based at Scarriff responed to the call-out and within ten minutes of arriving at the scene, which was located fifty miles away from the Maternity Hosptial in Limerick, they delivered a baby safely.

The following night, the Scarriff ambulance crew were called to Nenagh in South Tipperary, which meant that there was no cover in East Clare on Tuesday.

Independent Councillor Ian Lynch is calling on the Health Minister to intervene in the ongoing crisis in East Clare, saying that if the baby was delivered the following night, circumstances could have been more serious.

Councillor Lynch says the fact that cover was provided on Monday was just "pure luck".

Clare FM has sought comment from the National Ambulance Service but as yet has received a response.
