Most Passengers Released From UHL Following Aircraft Incident

The majority of passengers taken to hospital following a medical situation on board a transatlantic flight have now been released.

12 were brought to hospital in Limerick after the United Airlines flight diverted to Shannon this morning.

Flight UA880 was travelling from Houston, Texas to London Heathrow when it encountered turbulence.

It's understood the plane, which had 220 people on board, had hit a wind pocket.

10 passengers, including three children, were hurt, along with 2 crew.  

Their injuries, in the main, were soft tissue injuries, minor head injuries and cuts.

The 12 were taken to hospital after the Boeing 767-300 touched down at Shannon before 6 o'clock this morning.

Shannon Airport has confirmed the circumstances of the incident, and outlined how  HSE ambulances were at the scene to meet the flight. 

Staff at University Hospital Limerick Hospital cleared the Clinical Decision Unit and paediatric area at Dooradoyle after they was notified of the incident early this morning.

United Airlines says the one person remaining in hospital is a crew member, that it has provided care and support to those affected, and wishes them a quick recovery.

Passengers are expected to continue their journeys to Heathrow this afternoon.
