The spillages were reported on the N18 at Hurlers Cross, between Ballycasey and Junction 8 of the motorway, and in Shannon town between the Texaco entrance and the traffic lights.
It's understood that the issue arose after a refuse lorry suffered a hydraulic leak.
Crews from the County Fire Service, Clare County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland have been taking part in the clean-up effort, which has lasted for a number of hours today.
Motorists are being to drive with care in the area.
