Moves stepped up in controversial Shannon Water extraction plan

Efforts to fast-track controversial plans to extract thousand of gallons of water from Lough Derg to service Dublin households will be made today.

The Chief Executive of Bord Na Mona is before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Environment to outline proposals to develop a reservoir for the project on one of its Midland Bogs.

It comes ahead of a visit to the site by the committee tomorrow.

Dublin City Council which is behind the proposal claim 1000 jobs would be created on the 540 million euro development which would also house a tourist friendly eco park.

However the proposals have met with severe opposition from Shannon campaigners who believe it would have a detrimental effect on rivers and lakes here.

Committee member and Clare Fianna fail TD Timmy Dooley is vowing to fight against the plans which he feels makes little sense.
