Mulcahy calls for companies to consider salary increases

A Clare government politican says Ireland can't afford to go down the route of cross-sector negotiated pay plans.

Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy's been reacting to an apparent disagreement between the government partners this week.

The Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton said he'd prefer to see tax cuts over salary rises however, but Labour Junior Minister Ged Nash called for an increase in income for those who work in the private sector.

Senator Mulcahy says if and when companies can afford to increase salaries they should do so
