The constituency commission was asked by the government to examine the electoral boundaries in the country – with a view to reducing the number of TDs in the Dáil.

The Irish Times reports today that the commission is set to return next month with recommendations to reduce the number of TDs elected from 166 down to 158.

The measure will cause major political upheaval for all parties. It will see a reduction of three seats in Muster with Kerry, Cork and Tipperary each loosing a seat.

Three seats will also be lost in Connacht Ulster in Donegal, Cavan-Monaghan and either Galway or Mayo.

And three seats will also be lost in Dublin, while the constituency of Laois Offaly is set to gain a TD.
