The control of the council is not yet clear with no political party winning a clear majority in the local elections two weeks ago.

The line up of the new 32 seat Clare County Council boasts some changes from the previous local authority.

Five councillors lost their seats in the local elections, Peter Considine, Bernard Hanrahan, Tom Prendeville, Tony O’Brien and John Mashen McInerney while four more retired from the job.

Outgoing Mayor of Clare Fine Gael Councillor Madeline Taylor Quin will hand over the chain of office this afternoon at the Annual General Meeting of the council at Aras Chontae an Chláir this afternoon.

The incoming council is made up of 12 Fine Gael Councillors, 11 Fianna Fail, 7 Independents with one representative each for Labour and the Green Party

It’s expected that a power sharing agreement will emerge at the council when they meet at three o’clock

However, newly elected Independent Councillor James Breen says that the power sharing agreement between all parties is not what the people of the county voted for and he’s against it…
