New Strategy Needed To Prevent Further Restrictions Says Clare Independent TD

Clare’s Independent TD insists a new strategy is needed to allow society to function properly without the need for ongoing restrictions.

It comes as the Taoiseach has warned that further restrictions could be on the cards, due to escalating covid cases.

Less than a month after lifting the closing time restrictions on the hospitality sector, new measures were announced by the Taoiseach last night.

A curfew for the hospitality sector takes effect tomorrow, while everyone will be asked to work from home from this Friday.

Plans are also being finalised for cheaper antigen tests and for an expanded rollout of booster vaccines.

But it seems further restrictions could be on the cards before Christmas, with Micheal Martin saying it’s not clear if these new measures will be enough to reduce the Covid rates.

Clare’s Independent TD, Michael McNamara says it’s hard to see how the limited restrictions announced last evening will have any impact on the transmission of the virus in the community.

He says a new strategy is needed by Government.

The Pandemic Unemployment Payment will not be extended, despite the restrictions on the night-life sector.

The payment is being phased out, with further cuts this week.

Clare’s Fine Gael TD has acknowledged the strain that will be placed on nightclubs in particular by the new curfew, but is reassuring that there are extensive supports available to businesses such as the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Clarecastle Deputy Joe Carey says the situation will have to be monitored over the coming weeks.

The Chair of Clare VFI has expressed disappointment that the hospitality sector will be bearing the brunt of the pandemic once again in the run up to Christmas.

Charlie O’Meara says the new curfew is a major blow for late bars, music venues and nightclubs, who he believes are being told their business is finished for this year.

The Ennis publican insists the business supports must continue beyond the new year.
