Superintendent Smart came to Ennis after serving a short spell in Ennistymon.

He has since headed a Garda District which expanded during his tenure to take in all of East Clare, as well as the county town.

Now, however, he's leaving the position after two years, having been assigned to Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick under a series of widespread reshuffles announced by Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan.

Superintendent Smart is to be replaced by Brendan McDonagh, who is has been promoted after he served as Inspector at Limerick's Roxboro Road Garda Station.

He previously worked with the traffic corps in Clare.  The changes take effect from Monday, March 9th.
