Figures to be published later by the Department of Education, suggest that while less students are dropping out of school – those who do, are leaving at a younger age.
The problem is most prevalent in Limerick City – where 125 students or almost 10 per cent of its second level intake in 2004, did not sit the Junior Certificate and another 175 did not do the Leaving Certificate.

However, the report has also found that the number of students staying in school to complete their second level education is at its highest rate ever.
