Veteran writer and Clare Native Edna O Brien has become the first Irish author to win the Frank O Connor Short Story Award.
O’ Brien who hails from Tuamgraney scooped the top prize for her collection Saints and Sinners and received the honour in person in Cork last evening.

The award, worth 35,000 and now in its seventh year, is the richest in the world for a collection of short stories.
Edna O Brien first began writing short stories in Dublin where she had moved from Clare to study pharmacy and her first novel The Country Girls was banned by the government in 1960 because of its explicit sexual content
