Oireachtas Committee To Hear Shannon Concerns On Proposed Aer Lingus Sale

Shannon businesses and representatives of Shannon Group will both outline their concerns on the potential sale of Aer Lingus today.

The two bodies are among a number of interest groups due before a meeting of the Oireachtas Transport committee that will focus on the proposed deal.

In a statement ahead of today's hearing, the Chairman of Shannon Group says the Government must protect this region's connectivity to Heathrow.  Rose Hynes says the Airport is the single most important gateway to key international markets for Irish business.

Her calls are being echoed by employers in Shannon.  Julie Dickerson, Managing Director of Shannon Engine Support, believes a loss of connectivity with Heathrow would make potential investors re-think a move to Midwest.

Meanwhile, it now appears that government TDs could try to block the sale of Aer Lingus.

Reports today say that backbenchers from both Fine Gael and Labour have serious concerns at behind-closed doors party meetings

Tanaiste Joan Burton told Labour colleagues last night that she has yet to be convinced of whether the state should hand over its 25% stake in the former flag carrier.
