One In Four Fathers Opt For Paid Paternity Leave

Today's Irish Examiner claims there've been more than 16-thousand babies born over the last three months, but only three-and-a-half-thousand claims were made.

Under the new law eligible dads are entitled to 460 Euros from the State to cover two weeks off work.

However critics say the payment is too low to encourage most fathers to forego their usual wages. 

The Minister responsible, Leo Varadkar, still claims he's 'delighted' with the up-take and believes the numbers could rise as leave can be taken any time within the first 28 weeks after birth.
