OPW and Irish Rail clash over Ballycar flooding

Two state bodies are at loggerheads over who should pay for works to alleviate flooding at Ballycar, near Newmarket on Fergus.

A number of families have been left stranded, while trains haven't run between Ennis and Limerick in over three months as a result.

The Dáil has already heard that it is the OPW's view that Iarnród Eireann should cover the cost of flood works at Ballycar, given that they would be the main beneficiary.

Minister Brian Hayes has also estimated that these could cost up to €10 million.

However, in a statement to Clare FM, Irish Rail has said that the Office of Public Works should pay up, listing a number of reasons which include that the cause of flooding at Ballycar Lough is far removed from the rail line, and that the works could affect other land in the area, including towns such as Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Regarding the current flooding issues, Irish Rail has also said that flood waters are receding quickly at Ballycar.

When this has finished, a detailed inspection of embankments and structures will be carried out, and the body is confident that trains will run between Ennis and Limerick again by the end of the month.
