Clare’s Fine Gael Senator says grassroots members of the party voted against the system rather than Leo Varadkar in the leadership battle.
Varadkar emerged victorious in the election yesterday despite Simon Coveney getting 65 percent of the votes of the ordinary members.
However, Varadkar won 51 of the 73 votes in the parliamentary party, which saw him win.
