Over 170 Years To Clear Social Housing List At Current Rate

It could take over 170 years to clear the social housing list in Clare unless the current rate of development is stepped-up considerably.

It comes as new figures show 193 social housing units have been completed by Clare County Council in the past decade.

Over the past ten years, 177 social houses were completed by Clare County Council and a further 16 affordable houses.

The largest development was in Miltown Malbay, where 34 social houses were completed, while, there were smaller projects in Shannon, Corofin, Kildysart, Killaloe, Sixmilebridge, Clarecastle, Whitegate, Scarriff and Clonlara.

All of the affordable houses were located in Shannon and there were no social housing units built in Ennis over that time.

At this rate of development it would take over 170 years to clear the social housing list, on which there's currently over 3,000 people.

But Clare County Council says its making progress in achieving targets set out in the Social Housing Strategy.

The Housing Directorate is progressing with 21 social housing units at Tullyglass, Shannon which is in the planning stage, while, approval has also been given to complete the detailed design for 10 social dwellings in Quilty.
