Over 20 applications were made for ground mounted solar projects in Clare in the opening two months of 2016.
That's according to the Irish Solar Energy Association who are calling on the government to introduce a support mechanism for the industry, claiming it has the potential to create up to 7,300 jobs nationwide.

The group says this would provide a huge boost for the rural economy in particular, while also helping Ireland avoid up to 300 million in fines it faces if it does not meet its renewable energy targets by the year 2020.
It's claimed the development of the sector could also bring a windfall for farmers, through the use of their land for solar projects, while still retaining the fields for grazing.
