Over 50,000 Spent On Breakfast Clubs For Clare School Children

The State spent over 50,000 euro on breakfast clubs for Clare school children during the recently finished academic years.

It's part of a seven million euro nationwide spend on the initiative, which is becoming increasingly popular.

Breakfast clubs are run by around 700 schools nationwide.

Their aim is to provide regular and nutritious food to children who are then better prepared to take advantage of their education.

Typically, funding is provided to run the dlubs at disadvantaged or DEIS (desh) schools, and they benefit around 78,000 children nationally.

Clare, however, has one of the lowest spends of any county in Ireland for such clubs, at just under 52,000 euro.

Despite this, the figures suggest that around 600 children here are availing of the initiative.

Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has told the Dáil that funding levels for the recently finished academic year increased by 50% to meet the growing demand for the service.
